Measurement and Resource collector (MRCollector)

Overview
- Scalable distributed QoS measurement and resource collection
based on passive and active measurements.
- Flexible configuration of campaigns using policies to obtain
different kinds of measurement and resource data of border router
and inter-domain connections
- Interaction with other INTERMON tools (inter-domain route analyser
and IPFIX traffic meter) to configure parameters of the campaigns.
Design and Components
- MRCollector is a network data collector performing both active
(implementing a Cisco SAA probe) and passive (polling the MIB tree
of managed devices) measurements.
- Two basic layers: Management and Collection layer.
- Management Layer performs message exchange with the INTERMON
Tool Manager.
- Distributed Collection layer executes the campaign specifying
which data should be collected (interface, QoS, SNP-MIB) based on
following facilities:
- Device Interface discovery. Obtains interface name, interface
type, SNMP management index, bandwidth. Supports the discovery of
different vendor interfaces
- Cisco SAA probe driver implementing Cisco router Service Assurance
Agent for QoS measurements collection: ICMP, UDP, JITTER and HTTP.
- Tilab SNMP-MIB poller collecting both pre-defined traffic variables
for each known interface and generic user-defined MIB variables
using different granularities.

Scenario
- Device Interface Discovery. As MRCollector knows net topology
(i.e. how border router are connected each other) from Inter-domain
Route Analyser, it‘s supposed to retrieve information about
discovered interfaces.
- Configuration of the collection campaign. MRcollector provides
to the tool manager (as Element manager or other management external
system), a transparent XML interfaces that implements an easy descriptive
language to configure available measures. This interfaces supports
user task concurrency identified by a campaign ID.
- Collection campaign (scenario) is executed in order to obtain
data useful for QoS analysis. MRCollector starts a collection campaign
(interface resource and distributed measure) based on the configuration
statements previously received.
