Inter-domain Route Explorer
(InterRoute)

powered by:
Telefonica

Overview

  • BGP-4 protocol message monitoring and graphical presentation
  • Maintenance of inter-domain route explorer data base for historical study changes in inter-domain connectivity
  • Inter-domain route discovery between selected Internet sites (nodes, autonomous systems) with use of RIPE Route Repositories. Currently InterRoute relies on manual inspection of traceroute data to determine which files to consider in the RIPE route repositories. Further enhancements include adding more routing data sources (i.e. the Oregon Routeview Project), automating the data source selection process and extending the concept to IPv6 networks'.
  • Visual data mining of inter-domain routes between Internet sites using advanced graphical presentation with possibility to discover characteristics of Internet topology elements (border routers, exchange points, end systems) obtained from INTERMON data base.
  • Geographical data mining of inter-domain routes between Internet sites considering geographical distances between the elements of the routes
  • Inter-domain route event patterns detection and analysis based on evaluation of monitored BGP-4 protocol messages – in development
  • Inter-domain route quality metrics definition and evaluation analysis - in development

Interaction with other tools of INTERMON toolkit

  • Integrated inter-domain QoS and routing data mining in connection with spatio-temporal QoS analyser
  • Resource characteristics of inter-domain routes describing Internet topology elements (such as interface description, SNMP data ) collected in the INTERMON data base by MRCollector.

Design and components

  • Implementation using Merit's Multithreading Routing toolkit (MRT) http://www.mrtd.net
  • sbgp: simple BGP-4 speaker
  • route_btoa: converts binary BGP-4 routing information as provided by sbgp into human readable ASCII.

Scenarios

  • Inter-domain topology discovery on border router and autonomous system level using RIPE route repository
  • BGP-4 event monitoring
  • Inter-domain route quality analysis
